Anxiety’s Impact on Parenting | Abundant Life Family Podcast S2E8

Episode Summary

The hosts sit down with Dr. Jeff Cox, the Executive Pastor of Missions and Counseling at Abundant Life, to talk about anxiety’s impact on parenting. Dr. Cox says social media is behind one of the shifts he’s seeing in counseling children. A few years ago, depression was the biggest issue children were facing. Now, it’s anxiety. One of the biggest drivers of anxiety is social media. Social media drives comparison, which is the thief of joy and where anxiety thrives. Forty years ago, parents didn’t need to worry about social media. Now, it is creating anxiety in both parents and kids. Children will model their behavior after those closest to them, especially their parents. If the parent is always anxious, the child will learn to see the world that way too. Combating anxiety’s impact on parenting can look like soothing your body. That means parents slowing down, playing with their children, connecting to God’s Word and His Creation by spending time outdoors. Dr. Cox also talked about the importance of developing a healthy, secure attachment style with your child. This happens in the first five to seven years of life. Ways parents can combat an anxious attachment style with their children is to focus on: Delighting in them Listening to them and being present in conversations Teaching them to think highly of themselves and believe that God made them.
